SQL Server Compact Edition

Jan 8, 03:29 am

SQL Server Compact Edition went to RC1 in mid-November of 2006. Now, without much fan-fare the accompanying documentation has gone to RC1 as well.

If you remember SQL Compant Edition, it’s probably due to the tortuous path its nomenclature has taken through the development cycle. Originally called SQL Server Mobile Edition, that was dropped in favour of the punchier SQL Server Everywhere. Then, when confusion began to break out between its and Sybase’s market-dominant product of SQL Server Anywhere its name changed again and SQL Server Compat Edition was born in October 2006 (SQLce to its friends).

When you download it (a 1.8MB ZIP file) it installs under the rather cryptic name of ssm3chm.chm. Open it and you get the familiar Microsoft Help interface containing most things you could want to know about the SQLce syntax and environment.

SQL Server isn’t my area of expertise, but a quick flick through the pages using Search to dig out the things I usually get caught out by suggests it’s a pretty useful reference for Jacks-of-all-trades, like me. Whether it’s truly useful for SQL DBAs and developers I’ll leave for Jim to comment on.

Founders at Work

    1. Dear Sir,

We are using SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 and the front end is Visual Studio 2005 (VB.NET) windows application. We have some questions listed below:

      1. What 3 ways to create a database (if possible give me a sample code)? and tell me the advantage of this 3 way.
      2. We have a database in MsAccess97 its about 450 MB. We converted those datas into SQL Compact Edition 3.1 (.SDF format) it comes to 1.3 GB. Why its taking so much size? If any solution for this it will bge very helpful for us.
      3. We found there is an option in the Provider String called “Encrypt Database=True;”. We have used this option in our project but we don’t find any changes happened in the database.
      4. We are using a SQLCE database (1.3GB) in our application. While querying a table will take a minimum of 1 minute to retrieve the datas even though we did the Indexes for all the tables..

      Awaiting for your response.

      Thanks
      M. Gopalan
